Celebrate Your Favorite Hourly Worker & Give Them a Chance to Win $1,000
While most Americans with a “desk job” are being required to work from home, millions of “desk-less” hourly workers across the country are continuing to show up to work so that we have the things we still need – grocery store clerks so that we have groceries (and MAYBE even some toilet paper!), delivery drivers so that we don’t have to expose ourselves to others, plumbers to fix our leaking sinks, health care providers to take care of our sick, etc. Social distancing is not an option for them.
And, many of their hourly counterparts who were working at stores, restaurants, entertainment venues, car rental companies, etc. have already lost their jobs as their employers have shut their doors with no firm timeframe of when they will reopen. Again, social distancing and the opportunity to keep working from home was not an option for them in a world where their job was to be servicing the public. In some instances, these employees are only getting a couple of weeks of paid leave. In a lot of other instances, they’re not getting paid anything. With little to no nest egg to fall back on to continue to pay their bills, rent, mortgage, etc.
So, what can we all do to help? It may not seem like much, but what if we all just did 2 simple things.
- Be EXTRA Kind– We are challenging all of us to be EXTRA kind to the hourly workers with whom we come in contact. Maybe things take a bit longer at the store than normal. And, maybe your patience is a bit thinner than usual. But, know that these hourly workers are probably being impacted more by COVID-19 than you realize. So, try your best to be EXTRA kind right now. Thank them. Ask them how they’re doing. Heck, if you can afford it, leave them an extra tip that could go a long way for them. To that end, we’re going to start sharing a “day in the life” of hourly workers whose jobs and lives have been significantly impacted by COVID-19, with the hope that it can help all of us more fully appreciate and empathize with how much their lives have been negatively impacted.
- Celebrate Your Favorite Hourly Worker & Give Them a Chance to Win $1,000– Everyone needs some positivity right now – especially hourly workers. So, let’s publicly celebrate all of the amazing hourly workers that we come into contact with every day to recognize them for their efforts. We kicked off our EXTRAordinary Hourly Worker Campaign last month, and we’d like to challenge us all tonominateyour favorite hourly worker – whether they’re still working right now or not – so that we can celebrate them and give them the chance to win $1k this month. And, then publicly challenge at least one of your friends to do the same. It would be awesome to see a nationwide movement around encouraging and celebrating those who are being most impacted by COVID-19.
Let’s go make the best of this tumultuous time – take the time to be EXTRA kind to those being most impacted and let them know how grateful you are for them by publicly recognizing them. Wouldn’t it be amazing if that sentiment could persist even past the height of this pandemic?
